Netgroup’s research project, co-funded by the Ministry of Economic Development (MISE), aims to improve workplace safety through an innovative monitoring system. Using RFID technology, the system ensures that personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn correctly and monitors environmental conditions in real time to detect dangerous situations for operators.
The main needs the system aims to address are:
- Creation of a technological infrastructure for monitoring and controlling workplace safety through real-time management of personal protective equipment to ensure operator safety, in line with relevant regulations;
- Real-time monitoring and control of both PPE and environmental parameters, using control units, traceability solutions, and wireless and wired sensor networks.
The project involved the creation of two distinct electronic devices for both “on-body” and “on-site” use. The first device consists of a control unit worn by the operator, which uses an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) reader to continuously verify the presence of the PPE associated with the individual.
Proximity sensors are also connected to the control unit to monitor the correct closure of harnesses used for work at heights, as well as pressure sensors to monitor the loads to which the operator is subjected. The data acquired by the control unit is then sent to a central server that processes the data, verifies it, and communicates any alarm states.
Verification of correct PPE use: implement a system that ensures personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn correctly by workers.
Environmental monitoring: detect the presence of harmful gases and safeguard the health of operators.
Continuous monitoring: create devices that allow for continuous monitoring of PPE use and environmental conditions.
Data management: use of a central platform that processes the collected data, verifies alarm states, and communicates emergencies.
Technological integration: integrate various technologies (RFID, sensors, Wi-Fi) to ensure real-time traceability and the correct management of PPE and working conditions.
